The claim path
From first application through appeal.
Initial application
SSA and the state disability agency review nonmedical eligibility, medical evidence, work history, and functional ability.
Initial decision
SSA sends a written approval or denial. Read every notice and calendar the date immediately.
Reconsideration
A new reviewer considers the claim and updated evidence. This is often the first appeal after an initial denial.
Disability hearing
An Administrative Law Judge reviews the record, hears testimony, and may question vocational or medical experts.
Further appeal
Depending on the decision, a case may proceed to the Appeals Council or federal court.
What SSA evaluates
A diagnosis alone may not tell the whole story.
SSA generally looks at whether a medically determinable condition prevents substantial work and has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months, or result in death.
- Medical findings, testing, and treatment history
- Symptoms, medication effects, and daily functioning
- Physical and mental work-related limitations
- Past work, education, age, and vocational factors
- Whether other work may be possible under SSA rules
